You already know the joy that a dog can bring. The unconditional love of a dog is truly something special. But did you know that owning a dog may also bring health benefits too?
Studies have shown that stroking your dog can have a beneficial effect on your blood pressure.[1] Not only that but the rhythmic motion of petting your dog can help ease away any stress too. Plus, it’s free, easy to do and dogs love the attention. Don’t forget to speak with your GP if you have any concerns about your blood pressure.
Dogs truly are man’s best friend, always there when you need them. They’re a great source of companionship, will never judge you, and will listen to you talk even though they have almost no idea what you’re saying. With a dog you’re never truly alone.
It’s been discovered that people who own dogs are 31% less likely to die of a heart attack or stroke than people without a dog.[2] This is likely because a dog gets you out and about exercising more than you perhaps would do otherwise. They’re also, as mentioned above, a source of companionship which can help with feelings of social isolation that may otherwise hinder recovery.
Unless your furry friend has a note from the vet to say they can’t, it’s important for your dog to get their daily exercise in. Walking a dog is more fun than walking alone and they’re always excited to go with you. It’s good for your dog to get regular exercise too as it helps them to burn off any excess energy that they may otherwise put to mischievous use elsewhere!
Are you becoming more reluctant to take your dog for a walk due to concerns about your strength and balance? If you’re worried about your dog pulling you over while you’re out and about, ask a friend or relative to go with you. This way, they can hold the leash so you don’t have to worry about being pulled over and you still get all the benefits of walking.
If you’re struggling a little more than you would like with walking, we have a variety of mobility aids from walking sticks to rollators that may help you get around with more confidence.
