Down’s syndrome is a condition which can affect any pregnancy at any time so it’s important to be aware of what that can mean for your family.
Even though two babies with Down’s syndrome are born every day in the UK, and there are 60,000 people living with the condition in Britain, the causes and effects of Down’s syndrome are still misunderstood by many. Myths surrounding the condition, and how it affects those living with it, are often taken as fact and this is something we want to help change!
Down’s syndrome occurs at conception and over 90% of the time it happens completely by chance. It’s important to understand that if your unborn baby is diagnosed with Down’s syndrome there is nothing you could have done differently to prevent it happening.
Although the physical aspects of Down’s syndrome are apparent and fairly easy to identify, what about the effects it has on a person’s mental health and capabilities? This is often where the truth about Down’s syndrome gets a little hazy and where we feel raising awareness of the condition should be focused.
